Chewing tobacco refers to a form of smokeless tobacco (also known as chew, dip,
or chaw) that is prepared as coarsely shredded leaves or long strands of whole
leaves and consumed by placing a small portion of the chew between the gum and
cheek or crushed with teeth by chewing. Unlike dipping tobacco, it must be
mechanically crushed with the teeth to release nicotine and flavor.
Historically, chewing tobacco was the most popular form of tobacco use in the US
until it was overtaken by cigarettes in the early 20th Century.
Types of Chewing Tobacco
Loose leaf tobacco is sweetened and packaged loose in aluminum lined
pouches. The chewer simply takes a portion directly from the pouch. This is the
most widely available.
Plug tobacco is press formed into sheets, with the aid of a little syrup
(mostly molasses) which helps sweeten and maintain form. The sheets are then cut
into individual plugs, wrapped with fine tobacco, then packaged. Individual
servings must be bitten or cut directly from the plug.
Twist tobacco is spun and rolled into large strands of rope, then twisted
into a knot. The final product is much lower in moisture than loose leaf tobacco
or plug, and could be chewed or smoked in a pipe. This was the most common form
of chewing tobacco in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Tobacco bits are formed by rolling sweetened and flavored tobacco into
small pieces which are consumed individually. These are usually packaged in
small tins like mints.
